Dave Asprey and Dylan Gemelli Talk Mitochondria and Mitopure
Dave Asprey and Dylan Gemelli explore mitochondrial health, biohacking, and how Mitopure® supports energy, strength, and longevity.

What to know
Dave Asprey and Dylan Gemelli discuss the science of biohacking, mitochondrial health, and how to optimize longevity.
Both Asprey and Gemelli share that they rely on Mitopure®, a clinically validated form of Urolithin A that supports mitophagy.
Mitochondria act as the body’s control centers, regulating energy, inflammation, and cellular function. As we get older they start to decline.

Recently, Dylan Gemelli hosted Dave Asprey, a four-time New York Times bestselling author and host of The Human Upgrade podcast, for an in-depth conversation on biohacking and mitochondrial health. Both Dylan Gemelli and Dave Asprey are long-time users (and fans) of Mitopure® and how it can support overall health.
Here are some highlights from their conversation.

What is Biohacking?
Biohacking has rapidly evolved from a fringe concept into a global movement. Dave Asprey has been referred to as the “father of biohacking.” Dylan Gemelli asked Dave Asprey to define the term.
Dave Asprey: “Biohacking is just the art and science of changing the world around you and inside of you so you have more control of your state, more control of your biology.”

Dave Asprey Discusses Mitochondrial Health
Dylan Gemelli: “Why is mitochondrial health so important? What do most people not know about it that they should know and understand, and why it’s vital to longevity?”
This question opened the door for Dave Asprey to dive into both evolutionary biology and modern biohacking.
Dave Asprey: “All bacteria, all single-celled organisms can operate independently. They have a basic intelligence; they have an algorithm of life. What really happened was we had a cell floating around, and mitochondria [entered] the cell.”
The ancient origins of mitochondria
This evolutionary event, known as the endosymbiotic theory, explores why mitochondria ended up in the cell.
Dave Asprey: “[Mitochondria] are deciding the state of your body… and they’re telling each system of the body what to do… That means that if they’re stressed, they’re going to not make energy as much and they’re going to make inflammatory markers or stress hormones.”
This shift toward inflammation is one of the key reasons mitochondrial dysfunction is linked to nearly every chronic disease. Over time, stressed mitochondria accelerate the aging process by reducing cellular energy and increasing systemic stress.
And it’s really helpful to understand why mitochondrial health is so important because every disease of aging ultimately comes down to mitochondria; they are in charge of everything.Dave Asprey
Mitochondria as control centers
Dave Asprey: “Eventually, by studying mitochondria and studying neuroscience for 10 years, measuring the brainwaves 5 days at a time for high-performing CEO types, more than a thousand things. There’s an algorithm for how our bodies and mitochondria think, and it’s different than how our brains think.”
Interestingly, research also finds a link between cognitive decline, brain fog, and mitochondrial health, which amplifies this link between mental performance and the organelle.
Dave Asprey: “And it’s really helpful to understand why mitochondrial health is so important because every disease of aging ultimately comes down to mitochondria; they are in charge of everything.”
Dave Asprey Discusses Mitopure
Naturally, the discussion circled back to practical solutions. Both Gemelli and Asprey connected these insights to their personal use of Mitopure.
Dylan Gemelli: “I have taken a real big study into mitochondria because I started to partner with Timeline. They are the best. So it made me study cellular health.”
Dave Asprey: “I use Timeline. I've been working with them. The very first podcast of Urolithin A was on my show.”
The Science Behind Mitopure
Mitopure is the first clinically validated form of Urolithin A, the only postbiotic that supports mitophagy (the selective recycling of damaged mitochondria).
Through several randomized clinical trials (gold standard in research), published in leading peer-reviewed journals, our science has demonstrated that Mitopure can:
- Increase mitophagy by nearly 39% in comparison to the control group in just 4 months
- Increase muscular strength by 12% in 4 months
- Improved mitochondrial gene signatures
